Hello, and welcome to yet another installment of Engadget Laboratories. This time around we’re taking a pseudo scientific look at sub-$100 earbuds. We’ve all been caught out, headphoneless, and desperate to put some tunes in our ears. So, the question is, what exactly do you get for your money when you stumble into a Best Buy and pick up whatever happens to be hanging on the shelves? Clearly you’re trading convenience for selection when you shuffle into a big box shop for your audio needs, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should just grab the cheapest thing hanging by the register, or the most expensive for that matter. We randomly selected four sets of phones, at four different price points, and put it to a group of average Joes and Janes to see if they could actually tell the difference between a $100 pair of buds and a $10 pair (while blindfolded and trapped inside a booth).

The shuttering of New York’s Chinatown Fair back in March marked the end of an era for the city — a last vestige of a time when social gaming meant more than just logging on to Xbox Live. The arcade experience hasn’t completely disappeared form the metropolitan map, however — in recent years, a new crop of venues have remixed the concept of yesterday’s arcades, places like Brooklyn’s Barcade, a shrine to 80s gaming machines that does brisk business serving spirits to Williamsburg’s 21 and up crowd. Launched in Ridgewood, Queens by game developers Kunal Gupta and Syed Salahuddin, Babycastles takes the re-invention a step further, offering up something between an arcade space and an art gallery.

If you’re old enough to have spent any time in an arcade, surely at some point you splurged an extra couple of quarters to play a game in a seat that moved a bit, shook a bit, made some feeble attempt at making you feel like you’re really in the game. Kid’s play, that stuff (quite literally), but just like people don’t stop gaming as they get older so too such motion simulation tech doesn’t have to stay for kiddies. Enter Force Dynamics and enter the 401cr: a full-bore motion simulator that can not only generate over a G of acceleration but can spin you right ’round as many times as you like. We took it for a quite a few spins indeed, plus more than one crash, and we think you’ll want to check them out the video below.

Clear your calendars everybody, because tomorrow, February 17th at 7:00pm, the Engadget Show is back in a big way! GM’s head engineer Micky Bly (the man responsible for the Volt) will be on hand for some frank conversation about the future of cars and a bunch of mind-blowing demos to go with it. Oh, and GM says they have a big announcement that they will be making exclusively on the Engadget Show, so be a part of tech history and come join us, won’t you? Engadget auto editor Tim Stevens will be joining the fun and we’ll also have a very special guest from IBM’s Watson team, fresh off the game-show-playing supercomputer’s three-day run on Jeopardy. It will be a night to remember, with some incredible chiptunes music by Note! with visuals from Batsly Adams. As usual, we’ll be streaming live at 7:00PM from SIR’s Stage 37 (a new venue!) and we’ve got around 350 seats available on a first-come, first-served basis if you want to join us in person. Also, trust me when I say that the giveaways for this taping are going to absolutely blow. your. mind.

REMINDER: The Show will be taking place in a lovely new venue, the SIR Stage37 (ie. not the TimesCenter or Cooper Union), located in Manhattan at 508 West 37th Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues.

Tickets are — as always — free to anyone who would like to attend, but seating is limited, and tickets will be first come, first served… so get there early! Also, because of the nature of the space, we won’t be able to do assigned seats so the seats will be first-come, first-served as well (we know, just after you got used to assigned seating!). Here’s the updated info on our new ticketing policy that you need to know:

• There is no admission fee — tickets are completely free
• The event is all ages
• Ticketing will begin at the SIR Stage37 at 5:00PM on Thursday, February 17th, doors will open for seating at 6:15PM, and the show begins at 7:00PM
• We can’t do assigned seating in this venue, so remember that your ticket guarantees you entry into the show, but where you sit is up to you.
• You cannot collect tickets for friends or family — anyone who would like to come must be present to get a ticket
• Seating capacity is limited (we’ve got room for approximately 350), and once we’re full, we’re full
