The Android community may be awaiting its very own Instagram app, but at least Flickr has now stepped up to fill the void. Yesterday, the photo-sharing service unveiled its very first Android app, along with a new social feature known as Photo Session. Available for free on the Android Market, the app allows users to snap, filter and upload their photos directly to Facebook, Twitter or Flickr, all from the comfort of their own handset. It also features an array of camera functions like flash, ratio selection, and shutter focus, along with ten high-quality filters. Photo Session, meanwhile, allows you to browse through images with your friends in real-time. All you have to do is round up your online comrades, start a session and begin flipping through a photostream. Every time you move on to the next image, your friends will, too, effectively turning any browsing affair into a collective, Don Draper-like slide show. For more details, check out the source links below, or trot past the break for a video run-down of Photo Session.

Google Drive

GDrive, GDisk, Google Drive – whatever they’re calling it these days – is coming. At least according to our friends over at TechCrunch. The service has not just been a rumor, but an actual product since 2007. Sadly though, it never made it past the dogfooding stage. The internal cloud storage tool for Googlers has been highly anticipated, but in 2010 it seemed like the final nail was put in its coffin when Docs was turned into a makeshift replacement with the ability to store any file. Well, Google Drive still exists, and speculation is that Google Docs will eventually be rebranded as Drive and relaunched with non-Docs file storage moved to the forefront. What’s more, it’s rumored that there will be a desktop syncing component, similar to Dropbox. Of course, the image above (from a Google-sponsored presentation) and recently discovered mentions of Drive.Google.com in Chromium don’t necessarily mean anything. But, if Google actually plans on taking this Chrome OS thing seriously, Drive seems like a natural companion service. For now though, we’re just going to have wait patiently to see what, if anything, comes of these latest rumblings.

Google Drive could finally be ready for launch, may just be rebranded Docs originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 26 Sep 2011 10:46:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Sick of your friends saying you look fat in those jeans? Apparently, NTT DoCoMo feels your pain and aims to swap out the peer criticism with smartphone objectivity. Shown off in advance of CEATEC Japan 2011 (an annual electronics trade show), the operator took the wraps off several mobile-based accessories, ranging from gamma ray and UV light monitoring phone cases to a breathalyzer-like add-on for measuring body fat (you paying attention, HTC Rhyme?). There were also a couple of applications on hand for checking photos of food against a calorie database

Sure, it’s one thing to hit up the vending machine at work to get your Doritos fix, but free gifts? That’s exactly what Nokia‘s doing at the Skypark in Glasgow for the city’s Social Media Week with the help of 1000heads. Dubbed the “Nokia Gift Machine,” it allows event attendees to obtain one free gift per day including candy from the US of A, Nokia accessories and even smartphones for a lucky few. All it takes is a quick FourSquare check-in with #NokiaConnects followed by a share over Twitter, and a goodie-filled tube will be yours for the taking. It’ll only be in place until the 23rd, so if you’re there and haven’t given it whirl, consider this a quick heads-up from your friends at Engadget. Plus, who doesn’t love getting awesome stuff for free? Exactly. Full details in the PR past the break.

It’s that time of year again, when the leaves turn colors and a slew of new programming pops up on our HDTVs. We’ve pushed the series premieres to the top of each day’s listing to help you keep an eye out for some of the new shows coming your way, so now all you have to do is clear enough DVR space to keep up. Check out which selections from this week’s long list of possibles caught our eye, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Gears of War 3
Microsoft and Epic are ready to close out their trilogy on the Xbox 360 with this week’s release of Gears of War 3. Its cover based, third person shooter gameplay feels as fresh as it did the first time around and according to our friends at Joystiq, this iteration features “one of the most exciting, consistent campaign experiences on the Xbox 360, or any other system.” Assuming the new dedicated servers can keep online play running smoothly this time around, we don’t see any reason to miss this go-round with Marcus, Dom, Cole and whichever of the Carmine brothers is still alive.
($59.99 on Amazon, September 20th)

Workaholics
This was a surprise favorite for us last year, as its stars (and writers) Blake, Adam and Anders deal with the (slow) process of becoming adults while working and living together. It brings more to the table than your average stoner comedy, thanks to its stars / writers from the Mail Order Comedy Troupe. Last season’s To Friend A Predator episode took the it’s-so-wrong-it’s-funny style to its limit and left us in stitches, check out a quick preview of season two embedded after the break.
(September 20th, Comedy Central, 10:30PM)

Person of Interest
One more fall ritual is the debut of an interesting JJ Abrams-helmed show that confuses, intrigues, and eventually horrifically disappoints (on that same note, Fringe also debuts its new season Friday night). This year that show is Person of Interest, a show that features investigators trying to decipher and solve violent crimes before they actually happen. The only really weird thing is how grounded that plot is for a JJ Abrams show. After Lost we promised we’d never go down that rabbit hole again, we’ll find out how strong we are when this premieres Thursday night.
(September 22, CBS, 9PM)

Netflix in Latin America

Netflix promised our friends in Central and South America would soon be able to enjoy the pleasures of Watch Instantly. Starting today with Brazil, and with 43 other Latin American countries to follow before September 12th, the pioneering streaming video service is making good on that promise. Customers in the land of Carnival can enjoy a free one-month trial, after which a subscription will run $14.99 a month in Brazilian dollars. The roll out will be staggered over the coming days, with most areas getting a price point equivalent to $7.99 in American currency and some having both English and Spanish language options. For more details check out the PR after the break and the chart above.

[Thanks, Nicolas]

Lenovo’s been playing coy with the A1-07, giving us little to go on since we first caught wind of it at the FCC last month. Well, it appears it’s time to ditch those Blurrycam photos for some real-deal promo stills, because this mysterious slate quietly made its debut in China earlier this week — and from the looks of things, it’s already got its mind set on a vacation. Along with a smattering of photographs that picture the slab kicking it seaside, the official LePad A1-07 page shows off some familiar looking specs. As we’d previously heard, this LePad sports a 7-inch, 1024 x 600 display and a microSD slot. Unfortunately, our instincts were also right about the A1-07 lacking Honeycomb; this one’s running Android 2.3. What’s more, it packs a 1GHz TI OMAP3622 processor — not the OMAP3621 previously reported — 512MB of RAM, 16GB of storage, front and back-facing cameras, and a micro-USB port. The LePad A1-07 will set our friends in China back

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

This week green architecture boldly went where no buildings have gone before as Inhabitat reported on Jordan’s plans for a $1.5 billion Star Trek theme park that will be powered by alternative energy. We also showcased plans for a spiraling self-sufficient skyscraper that generates its own water, food, and power, and we took a first look at a shimmering office complex in India crowned with a digital eye. Meanwhile, GE launched a shining solar-powered carousel in Manhattan and a team of researchers developed a new breed of CO2-storing bricks that are 2.5 times stronger than concrete.

In other news, high-flying green vehicles charted the horizon as Pipistrel introduced the world’s most powerful electric airplane and an incredible human-powered helicopter broke a world record. We also saw Ohio State unveil plans for the 400 MPH Buckeye Bullet 3 and we showcased designs for a stunning concept car with a segmented transforming skin. Autonomous vehicles were a hot topic as well — London’s Heathrow airport rolled out a set of electric personal transportation pods, and China’s Hongqui unveiled a driverless car to compete with Google’s vehicle (which crashed this week).

It was also a big week for wearable technology as researchers developed new breed of stick-on tattoos that can track body functions and we took a look at a sonic fabric bag made from recycled audio tapes. Finally, we got set for the start of the academic year by bringing you six of the best solar-powered bags, an innovative new breed of e-paper that doesn’t require electricity, and we launched a blowout back to school contest where you could win $1155 in green school supplies — including a photovoltaic backpack and a HP Pavilion laptop.

The Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) Frankfurt looms on the horizon, meaning its time for another round of bodacious concept cars we want, but sadly can never have. We’ve already seen BMW’s entry and now it’s Audi’s turn to show off an electric city-dweller. Dubbed the “Urban Concept,” this latest e-tron is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic and wields a door contraption that’ll put Lambos to shame — assuming it ever makes it to market. And it just might, seeing as our friends over at Autoblog caught it slumming around Berlin in prototype garb. We’ll hear more from Ingolstadt come September, but in the meantime more sketches and snaps of the development mule await you at the source links below.
