Those of us stationed inside the Engadget compound are always wishing we had better WiFi signal at the outer reaches of the battlements. Thank heavens for Amped Wireless’ range of professional networking tools. With a 600mW amplifier and a high-gain bi-directional antenna, its SR600EX Pro Smart Repeater can expand the range of your internet transmissions by up to 1.5 miles. The device also has two extra network ports for other devices and is designed for large buildings, boats, RVs or, you know… massive gadget labs. On the other hand, the AP600EX Pro Access Point can sit on the end of a wired network and do the same job for building-to-building connections. Both devices come with a 30-foot power-over-ethernet cable and are available today for $180.

Nintendo’s E3 2011 keynote yesterday gave the world its first official look at the all-new Wii U hardware plus (we thought) a glimpse at the graphical capabilities of its next console. As it turns out, the impressive list of upcoming games for the 2012-bound console was just that, a list, with the visuals we saw on screen coming from PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of said titles. Nintendo of America chief Reggie Fils-Aime has confirmed that to be the case in an interview with GameTrailers, where he also points out that the eventual Wii U games will look at least as good as their PS3 / 360 counterparts. Which is why, in his eyes, it’s okay to show us those games being played on the competition’s (current-gen) hardware. He does remind us that the Wii U will be delivering graphics at a 1080p resolution, and points to the garden tech demo that also graced E3 as an indicator of what can be done with Nintendo’s next console. That’s all well and good, but maybe tell us in advance next time, Reggie?

Right on schedule, Panasonic’s gone and made its thinly-veiled Lumix DMC-G3 Micro Four Thirds shooter official. The camera succeeds the G2 with a a 16 megapixel sensor, support for 1080p AVCHD video recording with stereo audio, 4fps burst shooting at full resolution, and an articulating, 3-inch touchscreen that supplants some of the dials adorning the last-gen model. In addition to poking around menus, you can touch that display to focus on your subject, and slide your finger to tweak exposure, white balance, and depth of field — all in all, not unlike how you might interact with a smartphone camera. And, at 11.8 ounces, the aluminum-clad body weighs about ten percent less than its predecessor. Look for it in June for $700 in brown, red, and white — in addition to your garden-variety black. In the market for something more compact? Panny also trotted out the Lumix-FH7, a 16 megapixel point-and-shoot with 4x optical zoom and 720p movie recording. Oodles of photos below with a press release after the break.

Russian Motorists Viciously Beat Drunk Driver On VideoThis allegedly intoxicated driver of a large SUV crashed into dozen of cars on a busy Russian street. His victims, not pleased by this, beat the ever-living crap out of him today while police watch and participate. Warning: graphic video.

Russian Motorists Viciously Beat Drunk Driver On Video

After the allegedly intoxicated driver of a silver Hyundai — a 44-year-old Moscow resident named Oleg N. — crashed and rammed into 20 cars on the Garden Ring in Moscow earlier today. After attempting to flee the accident scene, he was grabbed and pulled from the car and savagely beaten by fellow Muscovites.

Although drunk drivers are truly a scourge, we’d never endorse the kind of savage communal retribution we see taking place in this video.

UPDATE: The driver was identified as Oleg N. of Moscow, described by his upset mother (translated) as “very subtle, very creative” and possibly just “excited” and “on the eve of his tormented insomnia.”

No More Apple at Costco

You can still purchase your garden variety edible apples, in bulk none the less, at your local Costco warehouse, but the wholesaler will no longer be selling products from Cupertino, California Apple. Costco will be phasing out Apple product by selling the last of remaining inventory in a move that is said to be mutual. In the past, Costco has offered slight discounts on iTune gift cards, iPod, iPod Touch models. The rift between Apple and Costco occurred, as Costco claims, that Apple has not allowed Costco to sell Apple products online while other retailers can do so, and that while the iPhone and iPad have been arriving at other popular retailers and wholesalers–including rival Sam’s Club–Costco still has not scored an agreement to offer those products.

Colorado's UFO WatchtowerIf you’re skipping airports this holiday in favor of a road trip, Roadside America can help you find something interesting near your route, like the UFO Watchtower in Hooper, Colo. — Ed.

Judy Messoline moved to the San Luis Valley, high in the Rocky Mountains, to raise cattle. Five years later she knew she’d made a mistake (“Cows don’t eat sand,” she told us). Only then, by accident, did she tap the Valley’s true natural resource: UFOs.

It started as a joke. Judy’s neighbors had mentioned strange things that they’d seen in the clear night skies of the Valley, and she knew that UFO-watchers would sometimes visit her ranch after dark. To earn some money (she’d sold her cattle), Judy opened a campground on her bone-dry land, built a small stucco saucer dome as a gift shop, and surrounded it with a ten-foot-high viewing platform.

Unapologetic, she called it “The UFO Watchtower” because, as she told us, “When you’re already at 7,600 feet, you don’t need to be much higher.”

The tower opened in the summer of 2000. Judy didn’t expect that anyone would see anything from it, other than the distant mountain ranges and the stars at night. What she didn’t know was that the San Luis Valley is revered among flying saucer buffs as one of the best places in the world to see UFOs. And Judy’s watchtower was right in the middle of it.

The faithful flocked to Judy’s property and made it a popular stopover. To her surprise, other Valley residents began stopping by as well, telling her their stories and using Judy as a kind of UFO counselor. “If you didn’t know the people, you’d think they were crazy,” she said. Judy began writing down what she’d been told, and the stories now fill several binders in the gift shop (which also stocks a healthy selection of bug-eyed alien souvenirs).

Colorado's UFO WatchtowerWe visited during the day, when sightings are less frequent (“The serious people come in the evening,” Judy said) but we climbed the steps of the metal tower for a firsthand look. Aside from the view eastward of the Great Sand Dune, most of what is visible across the billiard-table terrain is the sky. Judy was correct; she didn’t need to build much of a tower to get a good view.

The most curious daytime sight is Judy’s “Healing Garden,” which spreads out from the dome’s back door. Judy said that over twenty psychics had visited The UFO Watchtower and that “they’ve all said that there’s two large vortexes out here.”

The vortexes have been outlined with rocks and the Garden has grown around them, an organized clutter of items left by visitors: CDs, sunglasses, hubcaps, stuffed toys, and lots of pens. Judy explained, matter-of-factly, that anyone who leaves something personal in the Garden is entitled to make a request, and that “there are two large beings here who protect the entrances to the vortexes, but they are also here to help.” According to Judy, the success-to-request rate has been quite good.

We asked Judy if the presence of the vortexes had influenced her decision to build The UFO Watchtower. No, she said, it was the other way around; the vortexes appeared because the tower had been built. “The psychics said that vortexes do form around UFO facilities,” Judy said. “I hadn’t anticipated that at all.”

As you can probably guess, hanging out at The UFO Watchtower has turned the former rancher-skeptic Judy into an earnest UFO believer.

“I know what I’ve seen with my own eyes,” she said, recounting some of the two-dozen-plus sightings that she’s had from the watchtower (there have been many more that she’s missed). She tries to keep a sense of humor about it, providing a separate guest sign-in book for aliens (several visitors have claimed to be extraterrestrial) and advertising her Notary status so that she can perform weddings at the Watchtower.

“If you don’t have some giggles with this,” she said, “you’re gonna go nuts.”

DIY flight simulator in the middle of your garden

Ever wished you could grow up and be a pilot? Well, you would certainly need to have the aptitude for such a high flying job (pun not intended), and certainly stuff like flight simulators ought to interest you from early on. Well, if you want to have a professional flight simulator in your home without having to go through the pains of joining the military or airline academy, there is always a solution – build one yourself. That’s exactly what Matt Thomas did, resulting in the Moving Axis Aircraft Simulator. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, right?
