Over the past couple of years, HTC has rapidly built up an enviable reputation (and bank balance) in the smartphone space with a succession of feature-rich, smartly designed, and innovative handsets. The HD2 introduced us to the 4.3-inch form factor, the EVO 4G ushered in the era of 720p video recording, and the Legend wrapped itself inside a never-before-seen aluminum unibody enclosure.

Today, the company’s Android assembly line is turning out yet another groundbreaking device, though this one’s closer in size to the Athena than the Aria. Yes, we’re talking about the 7-inch Flyer, the most unique of this year’s Android tablet offerings, opting for a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a sturdy aluminum construction that doesn’t even try to compete in the race for extreme thinness, and a Magic Pen to make you forget it’s running Gingerbread and not Honeycomb (yet). Also set for release under the EVO View 4G moniker on Sprint in the US, this tablet is the sum of a set of bold choices on the part of HTC. The company says it’s thinking beyond today and intends to take webOS to “other connected devices, including printers, and some form factors you haven’t seen before.” Aside from the groundbreaking discovery that our next LaserJet might run the same code as the dashing new TouchPad, there are few specifics to be learned, but HP promises to share further details as the year goes on.

We had quite the interview with Sony’s Jack Tretton, but we certainly didn’t corner the market on hot new NGP details — Eurogamer and Game Informer quizzed the company’s Andrew House and Shuhei Yoshida, respectively, and came out with some important tidbits about the quad-core gaming handheld, particularly regarding pricing. Though Tretton suggested that we’ll see a price somewhere northward of the Nintendo 3DS’s $250, Yoshida was quoted as saying “It’s not going to be $599,” laughing off the idea that the system would cost as much as the PlayStation 3′s infamous appraisal at launch, and House said that Sony “will shoot for an affordable price that’s appropriate for the handheld gaming space.”

While none were willing to cough up a real ballpark estimate, the SCEE president revealed one way that the cost might come down: pushing out a lesser model without cellular connectivity, a strategy we’ve seen before. House said that while all devices come with WiFi, “a separate SKU will have 3G,” making us wonder which of the handheld’s other groundbreaking features might carry a premium. After all, OLED screens don’t come cheap.
