Alternative transportation blasted off into the future this week as DeLorean revealed plans to launch an all-electric vehicle in 2013 and Richard Branson announced the official opening of the Virgin Galactic Gateway spaceport. Researchers also developed a next-gen quantum levitation technology that could lead to floating vehicles, and we spotted a cloud concept blimp that soars through the skies. We also brought you an exclusive interview with Revenge of the Electric Car director Chris Paine, and we shared a leaked brochure with specs on Toyota’s new Prius C.

Renewable energy also rocketed towards a more sustainable tomorrow as Japan’s team Tokai took first place in the World Solar Challenge and Apple filed a set of patents for next-generation solar technology. Meanwhile Facebook announced plans to launch a new energy efficiency app in 2012 and we launched a contest where you can win one of 25 $600 home energy audits. We also showcased a stunning set of satellite photos of the world’s power lines, and since Halloween is on its way, we brought you a Zombie-Powered Vertical Farm designed to keep its inhabitants safe from the Living Dead.

Speaking of Halloween, this week we shared instructions for making a DIY cardboard box robot costume, and we launched our 2011 Green Halloween Costume Contest for kids. We also brought you several developments from the realm of eco textiles — a material that repairs its own rips and tears and a Japanese company that recycles old bras into power-generating fuel. Finally, we showcased several slick developments in aqueous technology: an oil skimmer that cleans up spills four times faster, an artificial muscle that could one day propel nanobots through the body, and a quirky set of ‘Macquariums‘ made from Apple iMacs.

Harrison Krix may never actually be invited to join Daft Punk, but at the very least, he’ll likely have the coolest Halloween costume in the room for pretty much the rest of his life. It’s true, we’ve seen plenty of folks have a go at the French electronic duo’s signature headware in the past — including one from Krix himself — but few if any have shown quite the attention to detail as this project from the Atlanta-based graphic designer. At the center of the project is an Arduino-controlled LED with text that can be changed over WiFi with an iOS device. Relive the four month project in the three and a half minute video after the jump. And if you’ve ever wondered what Back to the Future might have looked like with Thomas Bangalter as Marty McFly, check out the source link below.

PlayStation Vita out in October, says Blockbuster UK Flyer

Blockbuster may have had its share of trouble here in the States, but that doesn’t mean its British brother isn’t doing well enough to have (and leak) a big-shot release date or two. According to a flyer brandishing the Blockbuster logo and that good ‘ol co.uk extension, the PlayStation Vita will land in the United Kingdom on October 28th. That’s ominously close to Halloween — not that we’re suggesting anybody is having pre-holiday PSV boot-shakes, or anything — and the flyer’s fall release prediction squares up nicely with Sony’s “end of 2011″ launch window. As always, we suggest taking rumors and leaks such as this with a grain of salt — but considering Sony’s sinkable record regarding loose lips, we’d understand a low sodium approach. Hit the break to get a peek at the Blockbuster UK flyer — ready and waiting for your judgement.

Pac-Mac goes Roomba

Now here is a pretty unique idea for those who have a software that you want to showcase – why not find a way to infuse it with video game classics? For instance, this Unmanned Aerial System software that is being developed will require 5 Roombas appearing as though they were attending a Halloween event, with one dressed up as Pac-Man (being under the control of a player) while the rest will be “ghosts” that will be autonomous in nature, chasing Pac-Man whenever they spot him. Nice take on using a Roomba, since those white paper dots in the maze? They’ll be gobbled up by a hungry Pac-Man as he passes over them. You can have a look at this setup in action in the extended post. Now don’t get any funny ideas of throwing cherries and fruit on the floor to block his path…

I’m sure most of you know the hassle of putting up Christmas lights in the wintertime, and I’m sure you have that one guy in your neighborhood that simply leaves them up all year.

Fortunately, LiteLocker makes it more dignified to leave up the Christmas lights all year because it is able to cover them up when they are being used the other ten or eleven months out of the year.

LiteLocker comes in individual lengths of four feet each. They can then be lined up as long as the user wants, and then attach them to eaves with vinyl siding. I have a video after the jump so you can see how the lights “come out of their box”.

After Halloween, or whenever you normally light your Christmas lights, all you need to do is get your ladder and open up your lights. There is even a tool available to open up the LiteLockers without a ladder. I would imagine that they will make it so you can just flip a switch and the lights will come out of their box and turn on.

LiteLocker is available at its official site for about $24.95 per 24-foot kit. I doubt that you will get them sent to you before Christmas, but honestly, at what other time could I have posted about the LiteLocker when I just heard about it today?

California Dreamin’ November Road Rallying In A Convertible
Even though it’s November, the weather is great in California so we dropped the top on the appropriate car, a Ford Mustang GT/CS (the CS stands for California Special) and ran a road rallye.

California Dreamin’ November Road Rallying In A Convertible

Ford Mustangs are assembled in Flat Rock, Michigan, where this weekend the weather is reported to be between 38 and 49 degrees and raining, not exactly convertible weather. Luckily for us in California the weather is much kinder which allowed the El Dorado Touring Club and The Rallye Club to team up and put on a course marker/gimmick rallye.

California Dreamin’ November Road Rallying In A Convertible

Before the rallye began the drivers and navigators were treated to a “rallye school” where some of the gimmicks were explained. Most rallyes have some sort of theme and this one was based on The Amazing Spiderman. That meant while we drove along the rallye route searching for course markers we would have to use our Spidey Sense.

Course markers were placed on poles for teams to locate on the rallye. Once you found a course marker you would write it down on your score sheet and then receive supplemental instructions based on the letters and numbers on the course marker. This new information would send you on a detour where you may find more course markers (earning a higher score) or just get you totally lost.

Somewhere along the midpoint of the rallye we ran across the checkpoint. The only problem was there sat a small pumpkin resting on the checkpoint sign. The rallye general instructions said we were to “avoid all pumpkins during tonight’s rallye” which put us in quite the conundrum. Do we not go into the mandatory checkpoint? Is the pumpkin just a decoration leftover from Halloween? Why does my brain hurt? We ended up making a U-turn, finding a course marker that gave us supplemental instructions to ignore the pumpkin and then we were able to enter the checkpoint correctly. Does all of that sound a bit “fruity” to you? Welcome to gimmick rallying.

At the checkpoint they gave us some new instructions (street names to remember to turn on) which we taped to the dashboard so we would hopefully remember to turn on those streets when/if we saw them. The rallye personnel also gave us something else (the best part according to my thirteen year old navigator): candy! Luckily for us he quickly began to stuff his face with his new treat and accidentally found hidden inside of some of the candy wrappers more supplemental instructions, tricky, tricky. Using the information hidden inside the candy scored us more course markers, thus earning us a higher score on the rallye (and ironically a candy induced stomach ache for my young navigator).

We only had one unscheduled pit stop during the event which was due to my son sucking down more ounces of fluids than his bladder could hold. We stopped at a gas station, took care of business, checked our notes, made sure we were on course and then headed toward the finish. At the finish (which was at a local pizza parlor where a lot of beer and bench racing, or should I say bench rallying, was conducted), the rallye masters tallied our score sheet and then handed out trophies to the top finishers in each class.

California Dreamin’ November Road Rallying In A Convertible

The El Dorado Touring Club does a great job with their trophies and they hand out a plaque for each podium finishing driver and navigator. Pretty cool since if they only handed out one trophy teams would either have to Roe-Sham-Boe to see who gets to take “glory” home (the driver or the navigator), or run that sucker through a band saw and split it in half. Half of a first place trophy just doesn’t look quite right hanging on the wall.

Happy Halloween from GizmodoJust a little something to set the mood, from Gizmodo and guest artist emeritus, Powerpig. Featured in this picture: 24 undead minifigs, and a Lego Michael Jackson—it’s more involved than it sounds.

Though I assumed that the graveyard dance troupe was born of Powerpig’s photoshop wizardry, that’s not the case: “I had this in mind since Lego came out with the zombie fig in the winter, and picked up 24 of them,” powerpig says. BUT WAIT. You can get a zombie minifig? Yes.

You cannot, however, get a Lego Michael Jackson. That’s a custom blend: The head belongs to Seso, from the Prince of Persia set, the hair is from a skateboarding minifig, and the red body was borrowed from the Santa Claus that came with last year’s Lego advent calendar. The face, though, was added digitally.

He shot the photo right next to his desk, on an outskirt street of a Lego city that grows and shrinks with his mood and brick-needs. Here’s a wide shot of the city.

Happy Halloween from Gizmodo

Think I’m giving away too many of Powerpig’s secrets? I’m not worried about competition. Even if you managed to perfectly replicate the characters in this bricked-out music video, it still wouldn’t look the same. As Gizmodo contributing illustrator Sam Spratt says (often), “nobody lights a photo like Powerpig.”

See for yourself at Powerpig’s flickr page.
