Liking that Face Unlock on Ice Cream Sandwich we saw this morning? You can thank PittPatt for that. Here at AsiaD’s opening session, Android head honcho Andy Rubin just confirmed that said Pittsburgh-based company — acquired by Google earlier this year — was responsible for this nifty security feature. While the demo didn’t go as planned for Matias Duarte at the launch event, Andy was able to show us how Face Unlock’s meant to work on the stage just now. In fact, Andy said his team even had to “slow down the process” as PittPatt’s software was too fast to make folks believe that any security at all was involved — for what it’s worth, Walt Mossberg’s beard couldn’t get past the unlock screen on Andy’s Galaxy Nexus. If you’re of the ilk who vehemently hates contracts, yet adores T-Mobile, read on. Alongside its existing pay-as-you go plans, Little Magenta has introduced a new $60 choice, offering unlimited minutes, texting and data — though the latter is throttled after consuming 2GB. If a month of commitment is too rich for your blood, how about about one of three new “pay by the day” plans? The priciest option’s three bucks for all the minutes and texts you could ever want and 200MB of data at full speed. A dollar less still gets you unlimited talk time and texts, but slows that all you can eat data buffet down to 2G speeds. True cheapskates (or those who only communicate via the written word) will love the dollar daily plan, which grants boundless texting, but dispenses the data altogether and runs ten cents per minute for phone calls. The 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show is still rolling, but as the throngs of eager German motor enthusiasts fill the halls we’re grabbing our passports and fleeing back to the States. This year’s show had more EVs and infotainment-stuffed cars than ever before and, if what we saw here is any indication, the car of the future will have at least one smartphone or tablet built in there somewhere — maybe two. Now this is our idea of innovative competition. MetroPCS is partnering with Rhapsody to add another “unlimited” to its all-you-can-eat plan: music. Rather than being charged a monthly subscription charge to receive access to the service’s massive catalog of 12 million tunes, customers will get the same service — that’s playing, streaming, and even downloading tracks — without any additional charge on their monthly plan. So far, the service is only available for the carrier’s Android lineup, so head on over to the Market to download the app. Before you begin downloading music left and right, however, you’ll want to sign up for the feature online or over the phone. As other companies are taking away or throttling unlimited plans, it’s refreshing to see one that’s actually adding services to theirs. Full press release after the break.

Well everybody, it looks like the free ride is over: carriers in the US have started to seriously crack down on Android tethering apps. Head on over to the Android Market site and try to install an app that turns your smartphone into a WiFi hotspot — there’s a pretty good chance you’ll be told, “this item is not available on your carrier.” We checked out a number of different tethering options and they were all blocked by T-mobile and AT&T, which isn’t entirely new. Verizon has also joined the party and, while it missed at least one that we spotted, we’re sure they’ll all be gone in short order. Only Sprint has decided against banning such apps… for now. It looks like you might have to finally cough up for that tethering plan you’ve been desperately trying to avoid.

An energy efficient Ford F-150 certainly sounds like an oxymoron, but the folks at Protean Electric have proven that even this gas guzzler can go green. So how’d they do it? Well, with in-wheel motors of course. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this technology put to use, but if things go according to plan, Protean’s version of the in-wheel motor could be road ready as soon as next year. The things weigh 68 pounds (31 kilograms) a piece and offer 110 horsepower per wheel. When pared with this F-150 — rocking a custom battery — they offered up 100 mile-per-hour speeds and a range of 100 miles. That might not be enough to take you across the great state of Texas, but it’s certainly sufficient for tooting around the ranch. With this ruggedized, GPS-equipped FinePix XP30 from Fujifilm, you won’t have any trouble proving to your friends that that penguin photo your grandmother uses as her “screen saver” really was taken in Antarctica. Unless it happens to be snowing in Antarctica. Or even cloudy. This otherwise average 14.2 megapixel camera is the first to include GPS, but the gurus at Photography Blog had trouble getting a fix while testing in England. They also had issues with the battery door flipping open when the camera was dropped, and sand getting trapped in the zoom rocker — not problems you want to see on a ruggedized cam. Like most rugged cameras, the XP30′s image quality also doesn’t compare to its land-limited cousins, according to the review, so this $240 Fuji might be a better bet as a second shooter than your be-all and end-all camera. Acer already announced UK pricing for the Windows 7 and Android Honeycomb versions of its Iconia Tab, and now it’s ready to take both stateside. Days after Best Buy started taking pre-orders for the Android 3.0-powered Iconia Tab A500, the Windows-based W500 has shown up on B&H’s site for $549. Like its cousin, the W500 has a 10.1-inch (1280 x 800) display, HDMI-out and dual cameras, though it steps up to 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, AMD Radeon HD 6250 graphics, and a 1GHz Ontario (C-50) AMD Fusion APU. It also comes with a keyboard dock, putting it in the same price range as ASUS’s Android-based Eee Transformer, which costs less but doesn’t include its similar-looking keyboard. Acer rates the W500′s three-cell battery at up to six hours — a far cry from the iPad’s promised 10-hours and, perhaps, a good reason to wait for slates featuring that lower-power Fusion APU AMD’s been shopping around to tablet makers. B&H says it’ll ship starting April 15th, but head on over to its website if you’re psyched enough to place an order now. Or you can keep saving your pennies for Acer’s other Iconia.

This radiation infographic is too small to read. There’s a reason for that. Technically, it’s because we constrain images to 600 pixels wide. Stylistically, it’s because we’d like to point out that all things are relative. Head on over to XKCD to see just how much ionizing radiation you’re likely to be exposed to performing radioactive activities (or just sitting still) and how that compares to the amount that researchers presently believe is capable of having an ill effect. Then, decide whether you should enlarge or reduce the size of your tinfoil hat accordingly.
