In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you’d like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with “Insert Coin” as the subject line.

Romotive co-founder Peter Seid’s tweet read “I build robots powered by smartphone” — that was just the incentive we needed to go check out his and business partner Phu Nguyen’s creation while on a recent trip to Seattle. Romo is a simple and affordable tank-like robot platform that uses basic analog electronics to trigger two motors via any device’s headphone jack. The circuit is tuned to specific frequencies for each motor — playback the right tones, and you control the hardware.

With a smartphone as its brain, all of Romo’s logic and behavior live in the software. Three apps will be available at launch for both iOS and Android. RomoRemote lets you control the robot from another phone over WiFi, complete with remote live view and public address. Romo Kart is a mixed-reality version of Mario Kart, including digital attacks designed to slow down your adversaries. The Drag and Drop Programming Module makes it easy to program Romo directly from your handset with instant results.

During our visit with the folks at Romotive, we got a chance to try the RomoRemote app in person using a couple iPhones — not only is Romo adorable, but it works like a charm. The best part? Peter and Phu plan to make a complete SDK and libraries available to iOS and Android developers. While there are several amounts you can pledge, $78 lets you have Romo and the three aforementioned apps sometime in February 2012. The project is already halfway to its $32,000 goal with 42 days to go.

Take a look at our gallery above, then hit the break for our hands-on video and the all important Kickstarter link.

GoPro starts shipping $80 LCD BacPac for HD Hero, has no room for your lunch (video)

Aiming your helmet camera and replaying footage is a problem on most models. The HD170 makes it easy, but then hits you with a lot of bulk. Contour is working on a viewfinder app for iOS and Android devices that will wirelessly stream video, but that’s not out yet. GoPro’s LCD BacPac, on the other hand, is shipping today. We spent a little quality time with one at CES, a tiny screen that clips on the back of a 1080p HD Hero and lets you see what’s being filmed and also play back what you’ve captured earlier. As you can see it adds about a quarter-inch of depth onto the camera but comes with a replacement back door to retain compatibility with all mounts. It’s shipping now for $80, making it a somewhat expensive accessory for a $300 camera.

Designers out there seem fascinated with the common household power socket and seem to be continually trying to improve on it, and we’re not going to complain about that. Now the concept Chain Power Strip is a modular power strip that makes it easy to accommodate bigger power adapters and can also support USB charging ports. The flexible design of this power strip probably means that it’s easier to hide behind your sofa too, though it looks very futuristic if you leave it out in the open.

O'Car Stereo System (Images courtesy Oxygen Audio)
By Andrew Liszewski

Most car stereos that feature iPhone connectivity usually just have you attach a cable to the dock connector and then stash it away in your glove box. But Oxygen Audio’s O’Car stereo puts the iPhone 3G, 3GS & 4 up front and center where you can access all of your applications, whether you want to play or stream music, or make or answer a call.

The special articulated, pop-out cradle lets the iPhone be used in a landscape or portrait orientation, and a ball joint makes it easy to angle towards you if you want to use the touchscreen while driving. The stereo features a built-in radio tuner as well, and I’m assuming you can download an app which provides a UI for tuning stations and storing presets. It’s set to be unveiled at CES 2011 in January so there’s no pricing info just yet, but we’ll try to follow up with them at the show for more details.

The iProp For iPad

iProp (Images courtesy Aspire Innovation)
By Andrew Liszewski

At first glance I rolled my eyes at the iProp, thinking it was kind of overkill when it came to iPad stands. But as I perused the photos of it in use on their website, I thought of a lot of places where I’d actually find it quite useful. I particularly like the alarm clock idea, or for use in bed in general when my laziness is cranked to 11 (or should that be -1?) but even while crashed on the couch or working at my desk, being able to swing it around or easily re-position would be extremely convenient.

A ball and socket joint which connects the iPad holder to the rest of the stand means you can rotate it 360° or angle it however you want, and a generous 2 feet of articulated goose neck makes it easy to finesse its position. And while the forked base looks like it might be easy to tip over, it weighs in at 3lb. 13 oz. which should be more than enough to counterbalance the attached iPad. When it’s officially available sometime in the Spring of next year the iProp will sell for $79.95, but if you pre-order now you’ll get free shipping as an incentive.

The majority of augmented reality applications these days may be visual ones, but that’s hardly the only type of augmented reality possible, as fully evidenced by this so-called TagCandy device built by Yasuaki Kakehi of Keio University. As you can see above, it consists of a rather large base that accommodates a regular lollipop, which not only makes it easy to hold the candy, but uses bone-conduction technology to produce different sounds ranging from fizzy soda to fireworks. Of course, it is just a concept, and still something of a work in progress — future possibilities apparently include the ability to detect biting in addition to sucking, and the ability to buy and share different “sensations” on the internet. Head on past the break to check it out on video.

Slipper-Inspired Hard Drive Case Makes it Easy to Swap Between HDDs

If you own a number of bare hard drives without cases for them and need to access and swap between the drives frequently to access data and don’t need to invest in a case for each hard drive to connect it to your computer, you may want to check out Brando’s slipper-inspired hard drive case. The case essentially turns any internal hard drive you have laying around into an external USB-powered hard drive. It’s even USB 3.0 compatible for faster file transfer and has red toes sticking out at the end that serves as a lever to eject the drive out to make it easy to swap between a number of internal HDDs. The drives are available through Brando for $45.
