Good news: a team of software engineers, composers, Oscar-winning animators and more have come together to recreate Davy Jones’ locker in the cloud. Wemo Media is looking for a few thousand good artists for the project, to help create a massive simulation of life under the seas built on its Maker Platform. The project has been around for a bit, but is still in closed beta, making it a private development beach of sorts. It looks like the Micro SIM (announced with Apple’s first iPad last year) is destined to shed a few more grams, an Orange spokeswoman said — contradicting an earlier rumor claiming that Apple is trying to kill off the chip altogether. SIM cards in their current form have been in use for over a decade (a Micro SIM is simply a standard chip without the extra plastic), and today’s devices look nothing like the cell phones of 2001, so it’s no surprise that the SIM we’ve come to love and loathe has run its course. If adopted only by Apple devices, however, a new form factor would be an incredible setback for iPhone unlockers, since an unlocked device is useless unless multiple carriers offer a compatible SIM. Apple has submitted its proposal to ETSI with support from Orange, which says we may even see the smaller SIM sliding into devices next year.

We’re seeing NFC chips showing up and tickling the innards of more and more mobile devices, but at this rate it’s going to be ages before we see some proper market penetration. Gemalto may have just jump-started that process with a new NFC on a SIM card design that’s certified by MasterCard PayPass. It’s similar to the company’s Zuckerberg on a SIM project we heard about last month, but this time it’s wirelessly paying for a drink and not wirelessly telling your friends how much you just had to drink. This means near-field wireless payments could be brought to nearly every GSM phone on the planet, also allowing for secure on-device transactions, like adding more minutes to a pre-paid phone. This is said to be the beginning of a “mass commercial roll out,” giving us reason to hope that soon forgetting our wallets at home will be a feature and not a bug.

If you’ve updated your iPhone 4 to iOS 4.2.1 or above, you might be aware that there is currently no unlocking software available for the accompanying basebands. Naturally, we’d imagine the Dev-Team will soon provide a remedy for this lack of freedom, but for now, Gevey has you covered… somewhat. For $70, this imposter SIM promises to unlock, without the need to jailbreak, all the current basebands found embedded within 4.0 – 4.3. In the video after the break, it appears multiple — and frankly, just plain inconvenient — steps are required to get the kit working on your iPhone. What’s more, apparently you’ll need to do all of this again if you switch off the phone. Oh, and we should mention this involves snipping off a corner on your SIM card, and carriers tend not to like that. Our recommendation regarding this contraption? If you’re absolutely in the need of a carrier unlock and have the cash, proceed with caution. Otherwise, patience is your answer.

If you’re old enough to have spent any time in an arcade, surely at some point you splurged an extra couple of quarters to play a game in a seat that moved a bit, shook a bit, made some feeble attempt at making you feel like you’re really in the game. Kid’s play, that stuff (quite literally), but just like people don’t stop gaming as they get older so too such motion simulation tech doesn’t have to stay for kiddies. Enter Force Dynamics and enter the 401cr: a full-bore motion simulator that can not only generate over a G of acceleration but can spin you right ’round as many times as you like. We took it for a quite a few spins indeed, plus more than one crash, and we think you’ll want to check them out the video below.

Sure, Verizon’s holding a press conference tomorrow, but unless they’ve got a secret LTE smartphone or tablet (we can only hope) we’ve got a fairly good idea what the company will say. We’re hearing Verizon will flip the switch on its LTE network on December 5th, unveil a pair of hot new USB modems to take advantage of those supposedly stellar speeds, and launch the SIM cards required to make LTE function in the first place. The gadgets include the LG VL600 thumbstick we’ve seen before, but also this marvelous-looking Pantech UML290 key, which has not only a slick swiveling case but another dual-jointed USB port beneath. We doubt we’re going to have any trouble getting this one plugged into even the slimmest of port-abhorring slimline computing machines. See where one of the SIM cards goes in the gallery below.

You’ve got to admit, this is a little weird: we’ve received a number of tips today about T-Mobile USA customers being shipped Micro SIMs rather than the typical Mini SIMs. We’ve gotten a picture of just such a module (see above), and you can plainly see it’s not a hybrid — it can’t be snapped out as a Mini SIM, meaning that unless you’ve got an adapter lying around, you need to head into the store to get it swapped out for the right kind. The only consumer devices out there in any measurable quantity right now that make use of Micro SIMs are, of course, the iPad and iPhone 4 — and when you pair this up with the fact that T-Mobile stores are starting to sell iPhone cables right now, the situation is starting to get wacky. Now, we still want to stop short of suggesting this means T-Mobile is getting either the iPad or iPhone any time soon; after all, Apple would have to provide a new hardware variant that supports AWS 3G, and it’s totally reasonable to think the carrier could be offering other phones in the near future that’ll use Micro SIMs. We do love us a good conspiracy theory, though.
