If you’ve been following along, you know that a phone enthusiast named DJ_Steve has kept the Dell Streak fresh, thanks to a series of hacked ROMs, dubbed StreakDroid. The latest version, 2.0.0 (or GingerStreak, if you’re feeling cute) brings Gingerbread to the 5-inch smartphone — expanding on the last ROM, which gave hackers the option of selecting Gingerbread’s app launcher. As always, though, dear Steve has noted a handful of bugs in the ROM’s early stages, including issues with the Superuser app, less-than-stellar graphics performance, and the fact that both GPS and 720p video recording require an engineering baseband and DSP to be flashed. As of this writing, all of the comments are from Streak owners eager to download this for themselves. We assume you are, too, so let us know how the new ROM works out for ya.

Remember when we all laughed about making calls on the 5-inch Streak? Those were the days. Now it looks as if some clever tweakers have discovered a hidden phone app in Dell’s 7-inch model… but beyond the shell of a presentation, there’s not much to it. According to Streak Smart, rotation is enabled, there’s a dedicated voicemail button, and calls will not seem to connect (which is, in this particular instance, seemingly unrelated to the carrier). See the frustration for yourself in the video after the break; not to worry, fans of holding giant slates up to the ear when talking to loved ones, someone somewhere will assuredly get this working at some point.

Let’s be honest, the original Dell Streak had a bit of an identity crisis. The 5-inch device wasn’t sure if it belonged in the tablet or smartphone world, and ultimately it was targeted at a pretty niche user. But its larger brother, the Streak 7, is more self-aware. It’s a honest-to-goodness tablet meant for doing all those tablet-y things — surfing the web, reading e-books, watching video and more. Sure, the Streak 7 may just look like an enlarged version of the 5-inch version, but they differ in more than just screen size: the 7 packs a powerful 1GHz dual-core Tegra T20 processor, 1.3 megapixel front facing camera, 5 megapixel lens on the rear, T-Mobile “4G” HSPA+ connectivity, and 16GB of internal memory. The tablet runs Android 2.2 with Dell’s Stage UI for now, but Dell promises an upgrade to Honeycomb once it’s ready. It sounds like one of the more well-rounded 7-inch tablets on the market right now and at just $200 on contract at T-Mobile (it’s $450 without), it’s actually quite well priced. However, there are quite a few things that are going to keep 7-inch tablet seekers from forking over the cash. What are those? We’ll tell all in our full review — read on for more!

After initiating the first on-contract Galaxy Tab price cascade back in December that quickly led Sprint to respond, T-Mobile may chop subsidy prices again today for the 7-inch tablet to just under $250 (after a pesky $50 mail-in rebate). Together, that’s only $62 more than the bargain bin CherryPad, which should infuriate early adopters who paid double that only a few months ago, not to mention sober up Samsung. However, when you consider that pseudo-4G tablets like the Dell Streak 7 and LG G-Slate will join Magenta’s lineup soon, it is a viable strategy for extending the Tab’s consumer appeal in this viciously competitive Android tablet world we live in. Then again, if the dual-core processors teased for the Tab’s successor actually pan out, we doubt Samsung will need any assistance getting back to its smug position on top of the Android heap. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled on T-Mobile’s site today and be sure to update should the price change actually materialize.

We can do math, simple addition and multiplication anyway, but we have our doubts about T-Mobile. It seemed like a fairly straightforward thing to multiply $82.50 by four and take the result to determine the cost of the Dell Streak 7, but good ‘ol T-Mo says that was the result of a “technical error” and actually has no relevance to the MSRP of this here tablet. What is the actual price? Sadly we’re still just as much in the dark as you.
Update: This is of course a T-Mobile story, not Verizon, despite what the title original stated.

The folks over at TmoNews got themselves another juicy tidbit about Dell’s upcoming 7″ Android tablet. The Dell Streak 7, T-Mobile’s first 4G tablet should be dropping on February 2 if everything goes according to plan. The Dell Streak 7 runs Android 2.2 on a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, with a 7″ touchscreen, it packs a rear camera, a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera, comes with 32GB of internal storage, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. No pricing has been announced, but since the release date isn’t too far off, we’ll find out soon. Is a Tegra 2 processor and 4G enough to make you want the device or are you holding out for a Honeycomb tablet instead?

CES 2011 T-Mobile and Dell have announced the Streak 7, a larger Android Tablet based on NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 system on a chip. We got our hands on the tablet, and we can tell you that the extra 2-inch do make a big difference in terms of perceived size (in a good way). As a percentage of size growth, 2″ out of 5″ is significant. The tablet has a clean design, and the build quality seems high when compared with 7-inch competitors, but not quite as high as the iPad’s.

The back has a textured surface, which should help your tablet stay in your hand instead of bumping in that cold concrete in the parking lot. There’s a very discrete 1.3M webcam in the front and a larger one one in the back (5MP?). Unfortunately, the network here is fairly unreliable, and it’s a demo unit, so I can’t provide you a real sense of what the performance would look like – we’ll have to wait for a real test unit. Right now, it’s not really out of the ordinary. Obviously, the fact that this device is running on T-Mobile’s “4G” network was one of the focal point of today’s announcement. Specifications from Dell in the extended post.
- Android 2.2-based tablet delivers a seamless online experience
- Vibrant 7-inch, multi-touch display with full Adobe Flash 10.1
- 1.3MP front-facing camera for face-to-face chats on popular services, such as Qik or Skype
- Widescreen display optimally designed for mobile Web, video and movies
- Up to 32GB of internal storage, plus Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS built-in

We had
a nagging suspicion that this was goin’ down eventually. and here you have it: the
Dell Streak 7 has appeared on T-Mobile’s website! As of this posting, actually clicking on the option gives you nothing — but we assume that will change soon enough. In the meantime, they do have a Sidekick XL to sell you.

Remember how Dell’s supposed to be introducing a 7-inch Tegra 2-powered Android tablet, like, right now, possibly followed by a 10-inch model in a few months? Well, we’re not saying that’s what’s going on here, but consider the facts: the original 5-inch Streak has a model code of M01M, and a new device with code M02M just popped up in the Wi-Fi Alliance’s certification database identified as a “Mobile Internet Device” in the Smartphone category. Yes, 7 inches is a bit large for a “smartphone,” but the Alliance doesn’t have a great category for these tweeners that support cellular data (and like the European Galaxy Tab, some of them really are smartphones anyway). PocketNow suggests that we could also be looking at the Streak 2, which is possible — but considering the groundswell of rumors we’ve been hearing about a slightly larger tablet in the pipeline, that’s where our money lies. That holds especially true considering how close we are to CES, which promises to be a veritable tablet-fest this year — but regardless, we bet the truth comes out within the next couple weeks.
